How Do I Produce a Report of Vendor Purchases?

Let’s assume that vendor purchases include both purchases of inventory and expenses paid.  With that assumption, there no simple report to address all situations.  Finding the right report depends on the information you want to include on the report.

QuickBooks provides 2 reports that include vendor purchases: the Purchases by Vendor Detail Report and the Purchases by Vendor Summary Report.  Both of these reports can be found on the Reports->Purchases menu.

These reports are a simple way to identify vendor purchases, but they contain an important limitation: the reports only include purchases recorded on the Items tab of bills, checks, and credit card charges.  They do not include transactions recorded on the Expenses tab or payroll-related expenses.

Another approach is to use the Expenses by Vendor Detail Report or the Expenses by Vendor Summary Report, found on the Reports->Company & Financial menu.  However, this approach also contains a limitation: it only includes transactions sent to a general ledger expense account (whether or not the transaction was entered on the Items or the Expenses tab), not vendor purchases of inventory, which are additions to assets.

Vendor purchases (both purchases of inventory and expenses paid) are not the combination of the Purchases by Vendor and the Expenses by Vendor reports.  That’s because it’s possible to enter a transaction on the Items tab where the amount is sent to a general ledger expense account based on the account for that Item.  As a result, such a transaction would appear on both reports, and combining the values on these reports would result in double-counting.

Yet another approach is to start with a Custom Transaction Detail Report (or the Summary report if only summary totals are required) and to filter the report for certain transaction types.  At the simplest level, filter the report by Transaction Type and choose Multiple Transaction Types from the pull down.  When the Select Transaction Types window appears, select Check, Credit Card, Bill, CCard Credit, and Bill Credit.  Those selections will capture vendor purchases by check, bill, or credit card, net of all credits.

With that 1 filter applied, this report is a comprehensive list of purchases by vendor.  However, the report includes the payment side of each transaction, and there is no easy filter setting to restrict which accounts appear on the report and avoid the risk that a vendor purchase in that account would be missed.

Which approach is best suited to identify vendor purchases ultimately depends on the how transactions are entered in QuickBooks and the information sought after on the report.

What Does Error Code 3371 Mean?

According to Intuit, Error Code 3371: “Could not initialize license properties” is an error that indicates your QuickBooks installation is damaged.  Intuit offers a troubleshooting guide, including a downloadable wizard to help solve this error.  It estimates that following the steps to resolve the issue could take up to 45 minutes.

What Does Error Code 80070057 Mean?

According to Intuit, Error Code 80070057 has several variations, each of which has different causes and solutions.  Some variations remain unresolved. Interestingly, before converting our KnowledgeBase to the present format, our article on this error code was our most viewed article by a factor of more than 2 to 1.  That’s a good indicator of the relative occurrence of the error among QuickBooks users.

To attempt to resolve the error, match your exact error with the description below and follow the troubleshooting steps for that specific error.

Variation 1

Error Code 80070057: “There was an unexpected error reported while trying to run QuickBooks” is an error that has multiple possible causes.  The possible causes include:

  • your company file (.qbw) is damaged and you were attempting to backup or create a portable file (.qbm)
  • your QuickBooks installation is damaged
  • you were attempting to open a portable file (.qbm) but QuickBooks wasn’t open
  • the QuickBooks company file extension was changed or is the wrong type

The steps to resolve this error can include reviewing the extension of your company file, verifying your company file, repairing your QuickBooks installation, or re-installing QuickBooks.

Variation 2

Error: “80070057 the parameter is incorrect” and “You do not have sufficient permissions to delete files…”

There are 2 known causes for this error:

  • a user attempted to launch QuickBooks by double-clicking on a company file (.qbw) instead of launching QuickBooks first
  • by default BitDefender is blocking certain ports that QuickBooks uses to exchange data

Variation 3

Error: “80070057, the parameter is incorrect. There was an unexpected error reported while trying to run QuickBooks with company file [path and name].”

Unfortunately, Intuit hasn’t identified a resolution to this particular variation of the 80070057 error.  Two suggestions appear in this Intuit knowledge base article: restart all computers running QuickBooks or uninstall/reinstall QuickBooks.

Variation 4

Error: “80070057: parameter is incorrect” when clicking on a QBB, QBM, QBW, ND, or TLG file from a Google Search Timeline.

This is yet another variation of the 80070057 error, and unfortunately Intuit hasn’t identified a possible resolution at this time.  The error is discussed is this Intuit knowledge base article as well as this one.

What Does Error Code -6150, -1006 Mean?

According to Intuit, Error Code -6150, -1006: “An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to create, open, or use the company file” is an error that has multiple possible causes.  The possible causes include:

  • your company file (.qbw) is damaged and you were attempting to backup or create a portable file (.qbm)
  • your QuickBooks installation is damaged
  • you were attempting to open a portable file (.qbm) but QuickBooks wasn’t open
  • the QuickBooks company file extension was changed or is the wrong type
  • you were attempting to restore a QuickBooks for Macintosh backup file in QuickBooks for Windows

What Does Error Code -6190, -816 Mean?

According to Intuit, Error Code -6190, -816: “QuickBooks was unable to open the file [pathfilename] on the host” is an error that can occur when running QuickBooks in multi-user mode on a Linux server.  It’s caused because the company file (a file with an extension of .qbw) doesn’t match the transaction log (a file with an extension of .tlg).  If a company file without the matching transaction log file was updated on another computer and copied back to the server, the two files wouldn’t match.

The simple fix is to locate the mismatched transaction log file (.tlg) and delete it.  QuickBooks will automatically re-create it on startup.

It’s a good idea to know the folder in which your QuickBooks company file and associated transaction log file are located.  Once you’ve resolved this error and can successfully launch QuickBooks, you can confirm the File Information for that company by pressing F2 while QuickBooks is running.  Doing so will display the Product Information window.  The Location field shows the path to that company file.
