What Does Error Code -6108, -105 Mean?

Chief Mechanic · August 30, 2010 ·

According to Intuit, Error Code -6108, -105: “The QuickBooks company file cannot be opened.  Verify the users have Windows permissions.” is an error that can occur for one of several reasons:

  • more than 1 computer has hosting turned on (when only 1 computer should)
  • you’re not running the latest release for your version of QuickBooks
  • the QuickBooks Database Manager Service was prematurely stopped
  • in QuickBooks 2006, if the company file (.qbw) was never opened on the server hosting that file

Intuit offers a troubleshooting guide to address this issue that’s linked below.  This guide will discuss checking the Hosting setting on the server and each workstation.  One cause of this error is that multiple workstations are configured to host the company file (incorrect) instead of all workstations having a Hosting setting of off and a server configured with a Hosting setting of local files only or local and remote files (correct). You can confirm the Hosting setting by pressing F2 while QuickBooks is running.  Doing so will display the Product Information window.  The Hosting setting appears in the lower left corner.

How Do I Verify My Company File?

Chief Mechanic · August 30, 2010 ·

QuickBooks includes a utility to verify a company file to check for damage.  Verifying a company file is a routine procedure.  To verify your company file, visit the File->Utilities->Verify Data menu selection.

File verification will proceed on its own, updating its status as shown below.  If you need to cancel the verification process, press Esc.

Under normal circumstances, the verification process will complete and not find any problems, as shown below.  Simply click Ok to return to other tasks.

In the event the verification process finds a problem, you’ll see the Warning screen shown below.  Click Close and proceed to use the Rebuild Data function to fix this problem.

What Does Error Code 16638 85757 Mean?

Chief Mechanic · August 30, 2010 ·

According to Intuit, Error Code 16638 85757 occurs in QuickBooks 2006 when using online banking and indicates that your QuickBooks company file is damaged or you’re attempting to access a company file (.qbw) on a network (rather than a local) drive.

To resolve this error, attempt to reopen the company file (.qbw) that generated the error and check the path to the company file.  The file path at which QuickBooks expects to find the company file is the location shown on the Product Information screen.  This screen can be displayed by pressing F2 while in QuickBooks.

If the file path is on a network drive, you’ll need to move the company file to a local drive and repeat the online banking function that generated the error.  If the file path is a local drive or repeating that online banking function reproduces the same error, your company file (.qbw) may be damaged.  See our articles on running the Verify Data or Rebuild Data utilities.
