What Does Error Code -6000, -80 Mean?

Chief Mechanic · September 5, 2010 ·

According to Intuit, Error Code -6000, -80: “An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to access the company file” has multiple possible causes.  Here are screen shots of the actual error:

QuickBooks 2009

QuickBooks Premier 2009 Error Code -6000 -80

QuickBooks 2007

QuickBooks Premier 2007 Error Code -6000 -80

The possible causes of this error are:

  • a damaged company (.qbw) file
  • in a multi-user configuration, multiple computers are configured to host QuickBooks (incorrect) instead of only 1 (correct)
  • in a multi-user configuration, security software such as a firewall is blocking communication with the QuickBooks server
  • attempting to convert a file (such as .qbb backup file) to a company file (.qbw) over a network rather than on a local hard disk

There are a number of troubleshooting steps to resolve this error that are discussed in detail in the Intuit knowledge base article linked below.  Before proceeding to those steps, insure that all computers in your QuickBooks installation have been updated to the latest QuickBooks release.  To verify the version and release of QuickBooks, press F2 while QuickBooks is running to display the Product Information window.  The Product field shows the version and release at the top left of the window.  In the example below, Premier Accountant Edition 2009 is the version and R3P is the release.  Complete this step on each computer in your multi-user setup.

What Does Error Code -6189, -1005 Mean?

Chief Mechanic · September 5, 2010 ·

According to Intuit, Error Code -6189, -1005 “QuickBooks was unable to open the company file” can occur when attempting to open a QuickBooks company file (.qbw) created in a previous version of QuickBooks (e. g., 2008 or earlier) in QuickBooks 2009.  The Intuit article linked below also includes the contradictory explanation that the error is caused by attempting to open a QuickBooks 2009 company file (.qbw) in a previous version of QuickBooks – something that is not allowed.

This error text is also displayed:

QuickBooks was unable to open the company file <filename> on your computer. A possible reason for this may be that you don't have read/write permission for the files under the folder where the company file is saved. Obtain this permission and then try opening the file

At this time, the error is unresolved.  Intuit is investigating a resolution which may be included in a future QuickBooks release.

What Does Error Code -20 Mean?

Chief Mechanic · September 5, 2010 ·

Error Code -20 “QuickBooks PDF Converter Activation Error -20” seems to indicate that a code registry entry related to the integrated QuickBooks PDF converter could not be found.  The integrated QuickBooks PDF Converter is a driver licensed by Intuit from from Amyuni Technologies.  A screen shot of the error appears below:

QuickBooks Premier 2009 Error Code -20

The most common fix for this error is to re-install the PDF Converter, which involves deleting the QuickBooks PDF Converter and attempting to email any form or report.  QuickBooks will automatically reinstall the PDF Converter after you’ve deleted it.

For more information on deleting and re-installing the PDF Converter, consult this Intuit knowledge base article.

Error code -20 is one of a long list of errors tied to the integrated PDF converter.

Error code -20 also appears to related to 3 other issues:

  • using QuickBooks in a 64-bit version of either Windows Vista or XP
  • upgrading the Amyuni PDF Converter to a newer version through Windows Update
  • having QuickBooks 2007 and either QuickBooks 2008 or 2009 installed on the same computer

If you are using a 64-bit version of either Windows Vista or XP and have received this error, it was most likely caused because some of the default settings on the Amyuni PDF Converter aren’t compatible with 64-bit operating systems.  Intuit offers some possible solutions to this error in this Intuit knowledge base article.

We have also observed this error after installing operating system updates (not QuickBooks updates!) via Microsoft’s Windows Update service.  Updates to the Amyuni PDF Converter are detected by Windows Update.  Depending on your Windows Update settings, this update may have been installed automatically.  Since the updated Amyuni PDF Converter was not the licensed version that came with QuickBooks, QuickBooks doesn’t detect the updated driver as licensed and activated.  Unfortunately, deleting the QuickBooks PDF Converter and attempting to email another report (i. e., the recommendations above) do not appear to resolve the error in this circumstance.  The solution is to uninstall the single Windows Update that updated the Amyuni PDF Converter, reboot, and then try to email a report.  If the error still occurs, perform a clean install of QuickBooks.  Before re-installing any program or altering any data file, insure that you have multiple backup copies of the programs and data files you are modifying.

Generally speaking, it’s not a problem to have multiple versions of QuickBooks installed on the same computer, provided they’re in different directories.  Accountants often find this necessary to service clients with different QuickBooks versions.  However, the QuickBooks PDF Converter for QuickBooks 2007 is a slightly different version than that for QuickBooks 2008 or 2009.  This situation sometimes produces ErrorCode -20.  The solutions are to close QuickBooks and wait a short period of time before relaunching QuickBooks to allow time for shared resources to be released, thereby resolving the error.  Another possible solution is to repair your QuickBooks installation.  For more information on this error in this circumstance, consult this Intuit knowledge base article.  This error in QuickBooks 2007 is also discussed in another Intuit knowledge base article.  Unfortunately, the reports we’ve received indicate that the fixes do not resolve the problem for good.

For more information on resolving Error Code -20, consult this Intuit knowledge base article.

If the steps outlined in that article don’t resolve the error, Intuit also offers these basic printer troubleshooting tips.

What Information Does the Integrated Quickbooks Backup Function Actually Back Up?

Chief Mechanic · September 4, 2010 ·

Over the time, the scope of the information that the QuickBooks backup function actually backs up has increased.  As a result, a backup file (.qbb) is often much bigger than the company file (.qbw) itself.

If you’re using an older version of QuickBooks and you’re relying on the integrated backup function as your sole backup, you should check the Help file included with your version to make sure important files are included.

For QuickBooks 2008 through 2010, here’s a list of what is included in a .QBB file created with the integrated QuickBooks backup function:

  1. The company file (.qbw)
  2. Letters and templates
  3. Logos and images
  4. Printer settings
  5. Spell check files, including the user dictionary
  6. Financial Statement Designer files, including client and data files
  7. The transaction log (.tlg) file
  8. ND files (.nd)
  9. Cash Flow Projector (.cfp) files
  10. Business Planner (.bpw) files
  11. Loan Manager (.lmr) files

For more information on what’s included in a backup, consult this Intuit knowledgebase article.
