What Does Error Code -6189, -82 Mean?

According to Intuit, Error Code -6189, -82 can occur when a user is attempting open a QuickBooks company file (.qbw) that is stored in a location other than a local hard disk or the hard disk of a server running the QuickBooks Database Server Manager.

Examples of company file locations that can produce this error are:

  • USB or thumb drives
  • Zip drives
  • Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices

This error is also related to another similar error, error code -6000, -301.

To resolve this error, only access company files that are stored on a local hard disk or the hard disk of a server running the QuickBooks Database Server Manager.
